As this pipe gets smoked the pepper rises and falls, then sweetness begins to build. A very enjoyable characteristic emerges about midway through the smoke that is probably due to the interplay between the sweet Virginias and the slightly bitter Oriental tobaccos. It was not bold or complex. Not that that dominates in a nasty way, it actually belongs to the whole experience. This amazing blend could could easily be an all day blend for me. Luckily, the blend is delicious and I will be happy to try it many times in the future. Highly recommended. Its amazing, but there are too many blends I can horde without so much effort. "Margate is to the morning, what Penzance is to the evening." Sweeter in cob. The highest compliment I can make of this tobacco is that, more often than not, it does not even seem like smoking . I am not really a lot of Chi lover but this one seem to mellow out over the years to make it absolutely incredible. And I always hated Turkish blends. Try it- if you hate it, I'll buy it. Quality of leaf? Not really . The oriental/Turkish tobaccos. Creamy campfire smokiness. You'll have to decide for yourself if it is worth the hype. This is by far one of the best Laticia blends I have ever had. This is a very good English blend with some marvelous attributes. Near the bottom, the pipe goes out. Its not a full bodied Latakia bomb of thick pungent flavor. The bottom line: If you want to experience Penzance, you are going to have to acquire it. Having said that, I love the interplay of latakia and virginia--the latter being the glue that holds the whole thing together. I, for the most part, agree with them. I'll likely get burned at the stake for ranking this below 4 stars, but I've just never been as impressed with it as popular opinion holds. Maybe a little drying out will help. The room note is very pleasent while you smoke it but tends to sour after it sets so I might suggest this be an outside smoke. Nothing can or should detract from that. It's only been a few minutes since i got the email. The smokey latakia is perfectly balanced by the orientals that are savory and incense like, both supported by a dark mellow sweetness. An opportunity in every debacle, I learned that my expectations and goals are as at variance as an aficionado of aged single malt scotches and wine tasters who rinse and spit. Is a good English mixture, full rich (due to Orientals), but is too strong. Maybe. It's good, especially fresh right after opening the tin but I noticed a metallic and ashy (after) taste which distracts me from enjoying this blend. And then every pipe-smoker should go out and find some more, because it really is that good. I did'nt even touch the bourbon because I wanted a one on one with this fantastic blend. Fine quality tobaccos from an exceptional blending house that doesn't deliver. It's a real classic touch to the smoking experience. Based on the reviews here, you'd think this was the holy grail of English blends. If you like English blends and can find this, buy it. I combined my favorite aromatic (Lane's BCA - Black Cavendish), with Penzance to the ratio of 5:1 (BCA:Penzance). He threw out what looked like a pretty large package for tobacco and I became as giddy as a little schoolgirl. ============================================= Ok as an update I have noticed many people have trouble packing and lighting this particular blend and that keeps them from fully enjoying it. It is worth hunting this down, scouring B&M's and websites, its worth all the superlatives, all the praise, all the mystique. Definitely not! The tin nose is strong, yet inviting; dominated by a pungent, musty, slightly sweet and smoky aroma which translates largely intact into the bowl. And having acquired some experience now with Latakia blends, I know that the crumble characteristic is a consequence of pressing the small leaf Latakia, which tends to break up the press, not some product of grand design. Although some other blends do come in the same ballpark, they never come very close to the real thing. Ive tried this blend in different pipes, with and without filter, straight out of the tin or very dry, packed loose or tight. It just doesn't stand out near as much as I expected. It's kind of got the whole package. If you love Latakia then please do yourself the pleasure. If you like full, flavorful blends, stay away from this one! SPECIAL NOTE: Esoterica pipe tobaccos are only shipped to Milan Tobacconists a few times a year and in very small quantities. A bit too moist initially so a little drying out helps. The taste starts out with the sour salty tang that softens into creamy sweet with hints of dark fruit and a smoky if not peaty finish. I have never been able to purchase Penzance on SP, but resorted to purchasing it on the se condary market. This is still a great Oriental-forward English blend, but it lacks the magic of tins I've breached that were younger, albeit this could be just a matter of the seal. Penzance is a wonderful blend that I tend to smoke more in the fall than in any other time of year. In the tin it smells like a nice leathery english blend. Yet. Penzance leans a little more toward sweetness with a licorice-like taste. A muzzle is unnecessary, as this Black Lab neither barks nor bites. Upon opening my first tin of Penzance some four years ago, I was put off by its composition (described elsewhere). That is to say some of the characteristics are lost, and the smoking experience is rather dull and subdued, but in a good way. It might just be the fermentation process. If youre just starting to enjoy the smoky stuff, I would wait until youve got a few more blends under your belt so that you can fully appreciate this blend. The crumble cake form is easy to load. I can't add much more to what's been said, it's a fine medium English, I didn't bother to try and rub the slices, I just pinched what I wanted from the top with a thumb and forefinger and that worked just fine. After the third or forth light the pipe is lit with thin smoke output. Similar to westminster but more round and fuller with more sweetness. Very interesting, when you then look at the label. The tobacco itself is quite oily and has a generous dose of something offbeat that lends a vaguely medicinal aroma. Given the reviews for some reason I was expecting something overpowering like Dunhill?s nightcap mixed with Chinese gunpowder (I like nightcap sans gunpowder Chinese or otherwise). Overall, this tobacco provides an excellent smoking experience. Using the air-pocket method, I twist a wad into the top portion of the bowl, with some sprinkles to get it lit. Scarborough is a soft, smooth Virginia I think it best enjoyed outdoors and dedicate at least an hour to smoke a bowl to savor all the goodness. But that's okay because I don't find Latakia to be the main point of this blend. The mottled flake is unusual and I began by smoking it like any other flake. I have to agree that this is not a Lat-bomb, as the other orientals form a nice background, but the Latakia is (for me) the primary player and I prefer mixtures where it's more in the background as well. Well made, but I wouldn't displace any of My Pease English for it. It's got some great Orientals and maybe a bit of cavendish. Still not smokable. It then burns evenly and completely to a fine ash, often without any relight. It is even more mellow and flavorful than from a fresh tin. Every time I smoke it, I am once again surprised at the subtlety of flavor on offer. It was a great tobacco, it really was, but I find it absurd that people would horde this to the degree that they do. Slight tamping and quick relite and it was off to the races! I may hurt some feelings here, and receive a few threats, but Penzance simply does not deserve the status of Godly tobacco. Perhaps some people hope bad reviews will make Penzance more available. The best English I've tried to date. i have only had one 2oz tin of it so far but the tin was pretty amazing for me. The flavour of the virginias,turkish,orientals and cyprian latakia,are perfectly synchronised. She isn't particularly impressed with the vaper flakes I favor. It is just amazing. Light well and eavenly and pack flat w/ the bowl and relight. I opened up the tin and took a smell and thought "hell no" there is no way im filling a pipe with this but this morning I tried it.
